Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Apollo Hospital on Sunday afternoon to meet those injured in the stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata, assuring them of all possible help and speaking to doctors, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari accompanying him.
Shah Inspects Accident Site, Cancels Pandal Visits
Before meeting the injured, Shah and Adhikari inspected the spot of the accident at the pandal. Earlier in the day, the Home Minister visited the Kalighat temple and offered prayers. Shah had reached Kolkata on Saturday night. Following the tragedy, all his scheduled visits on Sunday to various Durga Puja pandals, including Belur Math in Howrah, have been postponed.
How the Stampede Unfolded
On Saturday evening, rain caused a sudden surge of crowd at the pandal, and the situation spiralled out of control as volunteers could not manage the crowd. A stampede broke out, and those who fell could not get up, as people ran over them. Nineteen people died in the tragedy, and a large number were injured.
