Agartala: Villagers attacked Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ashabari in Tripura’s Sipahijala district, injuring company commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar and jawan Manjit. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha condemned the incident and directed that action be taken.
Attack Took Place While Troops Were Clearing Bushes
According to media reports, the incident occurred on November 2. Jawans of the BSF’s 49th Battalion were clearing bushes near the village when locals attacked them, beating them with sticks, trying to snatch their weapons and damaging a vehicle. A video of the assault has gone viral on social media.
Detention of Villager Behind the Anger
The locals were angry over the detention of a villager, Hefjur Rahman, whom the BSF had reportedly held on smuggling charges. Villagers had earlier protested, calling him innocent and complaining that he was beaten, after which the violence broke out.
Tension Persists Over Anti-Smuggling Drive
The BSF is running a campaign against smugglers in Tripura. When locals are arrested during the drive, villagers often rise against the force and hold protests, which has kept tension high in the state.
