Lima, Oct.5: Young Indian shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar broke the world record in the final match to win gold in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event at the ISSF junior world championships. Tomar topped the field on Monday by equaling the junior world record score of 1185.

The youngster set a new junior world record with a score of 463.4, about seven points ahead of second-placed Frenchman Lucas Kryzs, who took silver with a score of 456.5.

With a score of 446.6, Gavin Barnick of the United States took bronze. Sanskar Havelia was 11th in the field with a score of 1160, Pankaj Mukheja was 15th with 1157, Sartaj Tiwana was 16th with 1157, and Gurman Singh was 22nd with 1153.

Naamya Kapoor, a 14-year-old Indian shooter, won the gold medal in the women’s 25m pistol event earlier in the day, beating out famed compatriot Manu Bhaker.

Kapoor won the tournament with a score of 36, beating out France’s Camille Jedrzejewski (33) and 19-year-old Olympian Bhakar (31), who has already won three gold medals.

Bhaker had to settle for bronze after a shoot-off on Monday, when the French markswoman won. Rhythm Sangwan, another Indian shooter in the women’s final, finished fourth as India swept the competition.

With a total of 580 points, Kapoor finished sixth in the qualifier, while Bhaker (587) and Sangwan (586) took the first two slots. In August, Kapoor of Delhi fired the second-best qualifying score of 583 to place fifth in the national shooting selection trials at the Dr Karni Singh Range.

India leads the standings with a total of 17 medals, including eight gold, six silver, and three bronze. The tournament has 32 nations and over 370 athletes, making it the first multi-discipline shooting event since the Tokyo Olympics.
