Ranchi, Oct 25: Two JMM leaders Sarvar Gaddi and Gulab Rambani have surrendered the ration card by paying the challan amount of Rs 32,939 and Rs 11,524 respectively.
The situation came up after the District Supply Officer sent them a legal notice to surrender the card.
District Supply Officer Albert Bilung said that due to non-eligible persons holding the card needy persons have to suffer.
“Near about 3000 persons have surrendered the card till now and daily at least 3-4 persons surrender their card,” Albert said.
There are almost 21,87,173 members covered under the PDS system in Ranchi which accounts for 89% of the total population of the district.
“As there is the festive season now, we are not being very strict but as soon as the deadline of October 30 for surrendering the card gets over we will start a drive to aware people and legal notice will be sent to those who are non-eligible,” Albert said.
“We will be providing an extension of 15 days for surrendering the card and after that strict actions will be taken against those who are well off and still having the card,” Albert further added.
On talking about the penalty, Albert said that the person caught under this will have to pay the full amount of the ration received through the PDS at the market rate.
