New Delhi, Oct 27: India is committed to respecting the rights of all nations as per UN Convention on Law of Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh while addressing at Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2021, being held virtually from October 27-29, 2021.

“We are fully determined to protect the legitimate rights and interests of our country in relation to our territorial water and exclusive economic zone while supporting the maintenance of a rule-based maritime system as mandated under UNCLOS 1982,” said the Defence Minister.

Rajnath Singh also focused on terrorism, privacy, drug trafficking and climate change, while talking about the challenges of contemporary times. He said that he is glad that this year’s Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue takes into account these challenges and convergences to build consensus.

UNCLOS 1982, is also known as Law of the sea which divides marine areas into five main zones namely-Internal Waters, Territorial Sea, Contiguous Zone, Exclusive Economic Zone and the High Seas. The Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue has been held every year since 2018. This time it focuses on eight specific sub-themes under the broad theme of “ Evolution in Maritime Strategy during the 21st century: Imperatives, Challenges and way ahead”.
