Dhanbad, Nov 3: Tata Steel has installed a ‘Hydro Mist Cannon’ in its Jharia colliery division of Dhanbad to get rid of air pollution and dust in polluted coalfields.
Sanjay Rajoria, General Manager of Tata Steel Jharia division, while installing the device for bailing out people from perennial problems of pollution, said that it is a multipurpose truck-mounted Hydro Mist Cannon which will help to clear air and dust from the area.
“The main advantage of these mist cannons is their mobility and can be deployed at various locations as per requirement. This device (Truck Mounted Hydro Mist Cannon) has a large coverage area and can be used for dust control efficiently by suppressing the airborne dust particles by 95%,” he added.
While briefing about the device, Sanjay Rajoria said that the Multipurpose Truck Mounted Hydro Mist Cannon is a 3-in-1 set-up equipped with pollution control measures.
It has a hosepipe arrangement of about 40-50 meters in length and has a mist throw range of 35-40 meters. It can discharge mist droplets of size 10-50 microns. The pressurized sprinklers have three nozzles. The front header is fitted with nozzles for road washing. The rear header is fitted with nozzles for dust suppression and the handheld nozzle with a hose pipe.
The mist generated by the cannon lowers the surface contention and makes it easy for the dust particles to agglomerate, particularly when it comes to deal with hydrophobic particles like coal.
The device holds significance for the coal belt because the suspended particulates matter (SPM) in air at some places of Dhanbad is higher than the permitted level.
This is the first time that such a device has been installed in the area to bail out the people of the coal belt from air pollution.
