Chandigarh, Nov 3: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday announced an interim financial relief of Rs 3,100 each for registered construction workers in the state.

“The financial grant of Rs 3,100 is a ‘shagun’ for construction workers and their families on the joyous festival of lights,” said the CM while making this announcement on the eve of Diwali.

“The amount will be directly transferred into the bank accounts of construction workers. The Board has nearly 3.17 lakh of registered construction workers across the state and disbursement is likely to involve an expenditure of Rs 90-100 crores on this count,” added CM Channi.

CM also asked the sarpanches and councillors both in rural and urban areas to get the maximum number of construction workers registered so that they could get the benefit of various welfare schemes of the government.

Meanwhile, Labour Minister Sangat Singh Gilzian said that the situation is gradually improving, still the progress of ongoing construction projects is at slow pace at many places and is yet to pick up.
