New Delhi, Nov.3: The World Health Organization has finally recommended Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine ‘Covaxin’ on Wednesday after a long delay.
The WHO’s Technical Advisory Group, which convened today, recommended that Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin be placed on the Emergency Use List, according to PTI. The World Health Organization’s panel had requested more information from the Hyderabad-based firm last week.
The Technical Advisory Group met on October 26 and asked Bharat Biotech for more information. Covaxin was found to be effective against symptomatic Covid-19 in 77.8% of cases and 65.2 percent of the time against the novel Delta variant in 65.2 percent of cases. The business announced in June that it has completed the final study of Covaxin effectiveness from Phase 3 studies.
Bharat Biotech was mired in a regulatory quagmire, with UN health agency independent technical specialists taking longer to analyse the evidence than previously announced timetables.
The WHO is now reviewing Covaxin’s clinical trial results in order to determine whether EUL should be used.
TAG-EUL is an independent advisory committee that advises WHO on whether or not a COVID-19 vaccine should be designated for emergency use under the EUL protocol.
Covaxin from Bharat Biotech and Covishield from AstraZeneca and Oxford University are the two most extensively used vaccinations in India.
