Dhanbad Nov 9: Four children, including three girls of a family, drowned in the Magrudih village river under Muffasil police station, around 5 km away from Giridih district headquarters on Tuesday.
A police official said the incident occurred around 11 am on Tuesday. The children had gone to the river along with their mother and aunt for cleaning the bamboo basket for the Chhath festival. Female members of the family were busy cleaning the baskets while all four children began bathing.
The deceased children were identified as Suhana Kumari (10) daughter of Madan Singh, Sonakshi Kumari (9) daughter of Tinku Singh, Diksha Kumari (12) granddaughter of Shyam Singh and Munna Kumar (12) son of Mahesh Singh.
The official said family members returned to the house after cleaning baskets leaving their children bathing in the river. In course of bathing children entered deep water and drowned.
Family members said Diksha Kumari, a resident of Bokaro had come to her grandfather’s house Giridih to celebrate the Chhath festival.
After getting information family members and villagers reached the spot and fished out all four children after half an hour rescue operation.
Getting information Giridih Sadar SDPO Anil Kumar Singh reached the spot with force for rescue. Giridih deputy mayor Prakash Seth, former MLA Nirbhai Shahabadi, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha district president Sanjay Singh also reached the village and consoled the victim families.
