Kanpur, Nov 28: Shreyas Iyer on Sunday became the first Indian batter to score a century and a half-century on Test debut. Iyer slammed his maiden Test century (105) on Day 2 of the Kanpur Test in India’s first innings against New Zealand on Friday. With this, he became the 16th Indian to score a century on Test debut. On Day 4, Iyer slammed a half-century (65) in India’s second innings and became the first from the county to register a century and a 50- run mark against his name in Test.

With 170 runs in the match against New Zealand, Iyer became the third highest run-scorer for India on debut, after Shikhar Dhawan (187) and Rohit Sharma (177).

Earlier in the day, India resumed its second innings at a score of 14/1 and a lead of 63 runs. However, New Zealand bowlers struck and scattered the top order for just 51 runs on the board. Pujara went after scoring 22 off 33 balls. Ajinkya Rahane was then dismissed for just 4 runs by Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel. Ravindra Jadeja, who scored a half-century in India’s first innings, was sent back to the pavilion by Southee for a duck. At 51 for five, Ashwin joined Iyer and played some attacking strokes.

Notably, India declared its second inning on a score of 234/7. Indian team has a total lead of 283 runs and now New Zeland needs 284 runs to win the test. Shreyas Iyer (65) and Wriddhiman Saha (61*) were the top scorer in the second inning.
