Dumka, Jan 11: Dumka police have arrested one dozen culprits on charges of illegal sale of lottery tickets after conducting raids at different locations.

Dy SP Noor Mustafa said in a press conference here at the town police station on Tuesday that raids were conducted in the house of one Niroj Boira at Dudhani and a mobile shop at a private bus stand when many incriminating items including cash and lottery tickets were recovered from the respective spots.

“The sale of lottery tickets is banned in Jharkhand but we were being tipped off about the same prompting us to conduct the raids,” Dy SP said adding that the racketeers used to sell lottery tickets of other states apart from running online lottery business.

He further said that culprits also used to sell duplicate lottery tickets to people, mostly marginal ones having become addicted to it.

Those arrested include Niroj Boira, Mohammad Saddam, Mohammad Abid Ansari, Mohammad Niyaj Masuri, Mohammad Alauddin, Mohammad Yousuf, Mohammad Akhtar, Dablu Ansari, Rohit Keshri, Kamruddin Sheikh, Amit Ranjan and Amirchand.

More culprits involved in the racket have been identified by the police on the basis of the confessions of the arrested ones who are absconding.

Cash amounting to Rs 27,000 and 11 mobile phones along with registers have been recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.

Meanwhile, points are also being raised against the police for not nabbing the kingpins who allegedly enjoy its patronage to run the illegal sale of lottery in both the rural and urban pockets of the district claiming that only petty operators of the large racket were arrested.
