New Delhi, Jan 11: India all-rounder Washington Sundar has tested positive for COVID-19. He has likely to miss the ODI series in South Africa after he tested positive ahead of the team’s departure on Tuesday. Sundar was part of the 18-member squad that was picked for the 3-match series, starting January 19.
Washington Sundar tested positive for Covid-19 when he was in Bengaluru and he did not travel to Mumbai with the rest of his teammates who are part of the ODI squad. The India white-ball unit will leave for South Africa from Mumbai on Monday evening.
The BCCI is all set to announce a replacement to Washington Sundar on Tuesday.
Washington Sundar has not played for India since a limited-overs series against England at home in 2021. He travelled with the Indian team to the UK but a finger injury ruled him out of the Test series.
Sundar was one of the 18 players chosen for the three-match series, which begins on January 19. When Washington Sundar tested positive for Covid-19 in Bengaluru, he did not fly to Mumbai with the rest of the ODI squad. The India white-ball team will depart Mumbai on Monday evening for South Africa.
On Tuesday, the BCCI is expected to name a replacement for Washington Sundar. Since a limited-overs series against England at home in 2021, Washington Sundar has not played for India. He travelled to the United Kingdom with the Indian team, but a finger injury forced him to miss the Test series.
Sundar also missed the second half of the IPL 2021 in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the T20 World Cup between September and November.
He made his competitive cricket comeback at the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this year, picking up 16 wickets and scoring 148 runs.
