Ranchi, Jan 12: Several cases of deaths have been reported in the state due to Covid-19. But the experts say that persons who also had co-morbidity or critical illness at the same time as corona infection were the ones who lost their lives.

According to Dr Pradeep Bhattacharya, Head of critical care at RIMS, only serious patients are admitted at RIMS who have corona infections and most of the cases are due to comorbidity or critical illness.

“Almost all the cases of Covid-19 infection admitted at RIMS have some of the other problems because of which they have been admitted. According to the guidelines of the state, we are not taking any cases which are on a precautionary basis,” Bhattacharya said.

“It is noticed that the people are recovering within a span of 3 to 5 days but the co-morbid patients are taking more time and deaths are happening only due to co-morbidity or critical illness,” Bhattacharya further said.

At the same time, Ajit Kumar of Sadar Hospital said that out of 22 patients admitted to the hospital only 6 are serious and on oxygen supply.

“Out of the 6 serious cases of Covid-19, three are not vaccinated because of which the recovery rate is slow and are on constant oxygen supply and the rest three are due to comorbidity,” Kumar said.

“Though the cases are not serious, the people have to stay cautious and follow the guidelines of the state strictly as people come to know about the pain only when they lose someone,” Kumar further said.

Appealing to the people of the state, he said that the population that is still unvaccinated should take the vaccines as soon as possible as it helps in easy recovery from Covid-19 infection.

In less than a week, more than a dozen deaths have been reported across the state even as the health experts attributed that the ongoing third wave, primarily triggered due to the Omicron variant, is less lethal and not many patients need hospitalization.

The experts said that the death rate is high among those with severe comorbid conditions. They, however, added that it is still not clear whether the new cases are caused by the Delta or the Omicron variant as Jharkhand does not have a genome sequencing machine to identify the strain.
