Jerusalem, Jan 14: Israel has discovered 20 cases of a novel sub-variant of the Covid Omicron strain, which is highly transmissible.

During the genome sequencing of Covid patients, the sub-variant known as BA.2 was revealed. It has more mutations and may be more violent than the original Omicron.

Scientists are concerned about the new development, although the threat presented by the new sub-variant is still unknown.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israel’s Health Ministry found no indication that BA.2 behaved differently than Omicron.

BA.2 was originally discovered in China a few weeks ago, and its origins are thought to be in India. According to state media Kan, it has also been observed in Denmark, Australia, Canada, and Singapore.

The number of virus carriers in Israel has reached a new high in the last week, rising from 12,000 to 48,000 every day.

While the number of critical patients is still small, it has begun to rise. On Thursday, there were 283 patients, up from 136 the week before.

In addition, over the preceding seven days, 284 new cases were categorised as serious, up 189% from the previous week, according to the Post.

The general position of patients looks to be much better than in earlier waves, as the Omicron produces only mild disease.

The Omicron variety (parent Pango lineage B.1.1.529) has three descendent lineages, according to the World Health Organization (BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3). The 69-70 deletion in the spike protein is present in BA.1 and BA.3, but not in BA.2.

Scientists from India’s Department of Biotechnology’s Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) recently discovered that both BA.1 and BA.2 were present in genome testing undertaken in the country.

In Maharashtra and numerous other states, BA.1 has been co-circulating with Delta and has even replaced it. According to media sources, BA.3 has yet to be found in the country.
