Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: India successfully test-fired a new version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile off the coast of Odisha in Balasore on Thursday.

According to the sources, the missile was loaded with new technological advancements that had been successfully demonstrated. BrahMos is a universal long-range supersonic cruise missile system developed by India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPOM. It can be launched from the ground, the sea, or the air.

For Anti-Ship and Land-Attack tasks, the system was created with two variations. According to the DRDO, BRAHMOS Weapon Systems has been inducted and is operational with both the Indian Navy (IN) and the Indian Army (IA).

A successful test of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was conducted earlier this month off the coast of India by the Indian Navy warship INS Vishakhapatnam.

The missile’s sea-to-sea variant was fired at maximum range and targeted the target ship with pinpoint precision.

“Today India successfully testfired a new version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile off the coast of Odisha in Balasore. The missile was equipped with new technological developments which were successfully proven,” said defence sources.

“Advanced sea to sea variant of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise missile was tested from INS Visakhapatnam today. The missile hit the designated target ship precisely,” the DRDO had said in a tweet.

The multi-role, multi-platform supersonic missile system has been deployed in all three arms of the Indian armed forces and has proven its mettle against sea, land, and air targets.

The system, which was first launched in 2001, has been successfully launched from Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft, Indian Navy ships, and mobile autonomous launchers. It is one of the most adaptable weapon systems in the country due to its precision and ability to interact with all three services.
