New Delhi, Jan 24: The Congress urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday to impose a ban on the film “Why I Killed Gandhi” in the state and on OTT platforms because it offends the party’s emotions.

In a letter to Maharashtra’s chief minister, Nana Patole, the state Congress unit president claimed that portraying Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin as a hero is unacceptable, and that his party is seeking a ban on the film.

A significant controversy occurred after NCP politician Amit Kohle posted on social media the teaser for a 45-minute low-budget film in which he plays Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathu Ram Godse.

According to the teaser, the film covers Godse’s trial after Gandhi’s killing, in which he defends his actions.

Kohle became a target for both Congress and his own party shortly after the trailer was released.

Later, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole slammed the filmmakers for ‘glorifying’ the guy who assassinated the nation’s father and said he will submit a letter to the state government asking for the film to be banned.

In the letter, Patole stated that, while Dr Kolhe is an artist, he is also a political party’s MP, and as such, he is expected to act more responsibly, and that he opposes Gandhi’s portrayal as a hero.
