New Delhi, Jan 27: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Twitter to express his disappointment that his follower count has remained unchanged since his account was temporarily suspended in August 2021 for a message about meeting the family members of a Dalit rape victim.

He asked to avoid twitter becoming “a pawn in the downfall of India’s idea.” In a letter to Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal, he stated that he wished to draw attention to Twitter’s unintentional role in stifling free and fair discourse.

He analyzed his account and compared it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s, Home Minister Amit Shah’s, and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s. He claimed that while his followers grew by 4 lakh on average in the first seven months of 2021, the growth slowed when his account was suspended for eight days in August of last year.

“I am writing to you on behalf of more than a billion Indians to not allow Twitter to become a pawn in the destruction of the idea of India,” Rahul Gandhi said in the letter.

“Perhaps not so coincidentally, it was precisely during these months that I raised the plight of a rape victim’s family in Delhi, stood in solidarity with farmers and fought the government on many other human rights issues. In fact, a video of mine that promised farmers that the three infamous farm laws would be repealed is among the most-watched videos on Twitter posted by any political leader in India in recent times,” reads the letter.
