Ranchi, Jan 29: The district administration in Latehar is set to change the district’s image from a highly Naxal affected region to a tourist destination. Lalmatia Dam has started attracting tourists to the region. Upon realising the potential of the dam, the Chief Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner to work towards the beautification of the area.

Notably, DC Abu Imran reached the dam with officials and inspected the area. After several meetings, an action plan was made to develop Lalmatia Dam as a tourist destination, after which the decision of beautification of the Dam was taken in the meeting of DTPC.  Thereafter the appearance of Lalmatia Dam changed completely.

The Navratan Garh Fort at Nawagarh, built-in Latehar in the 16th century by Raja Medini Rai, is being renovated and brought back to its grand form again. Following the instructions of the state government, the work of maintaining it has begun. As a part of this, the road to reach the fort has been improved, comfortable stairs have been constructed. As a result, the fort has started attracting tourists. Basic facilities have also been arranged for the visitors here.

According to Deputy Commissioner Abu Imran, the development of Nawagarh Fort and Lalmatia Dam as a tourist area is increasing the number of tourists in the district, while new opportunities for employment generation are also being created. More than 100 people have been trained by the district administration along with preparing an action plan for boating in Lalmatia Dam. 20 individuals have been selected for boating and 16 people for lifeguards. Boating will also begin soon at Lalmatia Dam.

DC Imran said after identifying other unexplored tourist places of Latehar, an action plan is being prepared for their development. Soon Betla and Netarhat will also become tourist destinations. This will provide direct and indirect employment to the locals.
