New Delhi, Jan 31: The Election Commission of India on Monday extended the ban on big political gatherings until February 11 after reviewing the COVID-19 situation in five poll-bound states ahead of the Assembly election in 2022.

The electoral commission has allowed physical rallies with a maximum capacity of 1000 persons in the first phase of the seven-phase assembly elections in Goa, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, which began on February 10.

Indoor meetings with a maximum capacity of 500 people are also permitted by the commission. Door-to-door campaigns are also permitted for a total of twenty people.

The ECI had extended the ban on physical demonstrations and roadshows until January 31 at its most recent meeting on January 22, citing an increase in COVID cases.
