Bengaluru, Feb 10: A three-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court on Thursday will hear petitions challenging the prohibition on students wearing hijabs in colleges.
On Wednesday, the case was referred to a larger Bench by Justice Krishna S. Dixit, who asked the Registry to forward the petitions to the Chief Justice for the formation of such a Bench due to the urgency of the matter.
The single-judge bench of Justice Dixit, said in an order, “This court after hearing the matter for some time is of a considered opinion that (given)…the enormous public importance of the questions involved, the batch of these cases may be heard by a larger bench if the Honorable Chief Justice decides, in his discretion.”
Now, on Thursday at 2.30 p.m., a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and including Justice Dixit and Justice Jaibunnisa M. Khazi will hear the applications.
The special bench will hear a total of five petitions on the matter on behalf of 18 girls from colleges in the Udupi region.
