Ranchi, Feb 11: Mahendra Ram, a native of Garhwa district, got a fresh lease of life after doctors of the Cardio-Thoracic Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department of RIMS successfully conducted an open heart surgery on him.

The CTVS department of RIMS has added a new chapter in the history of the hospital by performing open-heart surgery in just two and a half hours. An artificial valve has been installed in the heart of 26-year-old Mahendra Ram, removing the problem of the valve in his heart.

According to the doctors, his mitral valve was damaged, which needed to be replaced immediately. After the operation, the patient is now completely healthy. Soon he will be discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Rakesh Chaudhary said that when the family members came to RIMS with him, the situation was critical. The palpitations were very fast, the breath was short, and the feet and hands were swollen. Seeing the situation, it seemed difficult to save him.

“In the initial phase, we gave him some life-saving medicines, which brought a lot of relief. Investigation revealed that he had a disease called Tropical Eosinophilia Syndrome. Then his medicines were also administered. When the date of operation started approaching, he got corona. After recovery, the team performed his open heart surgery on Monday,” Choudhary said.

According to the RIMS officials, CTVS was started in 2012 but many doctors who had joined the department left the institute due to infrastructural shortcomings.

In 2017, Dr. Rakesh Choudhary and Dr. Anshul Kumar joined as a faculty after which operation theatre was commissioned in October 2018 which opened the doors for vascular surgeries in the department. However, the first open-heart surgery was conducted in February 2019 when doctors of CTVS along with the assistance of two experts from PGI Chandigarh conducted the first open-heart surgery.
