Srinagar, Feb 13: In the midst of a debate over the hijab, Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the saffron party intends to eliminate all Muslim symbols.

“I fear BJP won’t stop at Hijab. They will come for other symbols of Muslims and erase all. For Indian Muslims it is not enough to be an Indian, they have to be BJP as well,” said Mufti in Srinagar.

“Jammu and Kashmir is a political matter but they (BJP) want to make it a community matter,” she added.

Notably, the Hijab demonstrations began on February 4 at the Government Girls PU College in Karnataka’s Udupi district, when some students claimed they were prohibited from attending classes because they wore hijab (a headscarf worn by Muslim women).

Earlier this month, during the protests, some students wearing hijab were allegedly denied access to college.Following the protests, all universities under the Department of Higher Education and colleges under the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education have declared a three-day holiday beginning February 9. (DCTE).

Meanwhile, Farooq Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference, waded into the fray, saying that everyone has the right to eat whatever they want and to follow their religious views as they see fit.

“There are some radical elements who are attacking a particular religion in an attempt to win polls by dividing people along the communal lines,” Abdullah said while talking to reporters in Pulwama.
