New York, Feb 25: A United Nations Security Council (UNSC) vote on a resolution has been scheduled for Friday, amid Russia’s continued military campaign in Ukraine.
The proposal according to CNN, might be vetoed by Moscow. Under the Russian presidency, the meeting will begin at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Thursday that India will hold off on taking a position till the Security Council resolution on the Ukraine crisis is finalised.
“There is a possibility of UNSC resolution that would be tabled on the evolving situation. We have seen a draft resolution. I am told that would undergo considerable changes. We will wait to see the shape that this resolution takes before we can pronounce ourselves in the position that we will take on this issue,” Shringla said in a media briefing
Following Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, allegations surfaced that the US is preparing a UN resolution against Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Donetsk and Luhansk, Ukraine’s breakaway regions, as autonomous states on Monday. Later, Putin ordered special military operations in the Donbas region “to safeguard” the people.
He also cautioned other nations that interfering with Russia’s actions would result in “consequences.”
Russia’s military activities in the Donbas region have been criticised by leaders from a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the European Union.
