UP polls phase 5: 8% voter turnout till 9 am

Lucknow, Feb 27: The fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, which will decide the destiny of 692 candidates running for 61 seats across the state’s 12 districts, began at 7 a.m. on Sunday (February 27). Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, who is running for the Sirathu assembly seat in the Kaushambi district, is one of the most prominent candidates in the fifth phase. Pallavi Patel of the Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) is his opponent. On Sunday, voters will go to the polls in Amethi and Raebareli, which were formerly considered strongholds of the Congress party, as well as Ayodhya, the epicentre of the Ram temple campaign.

Siddharth Nath Singh of Allahabad West, Rajendra Singh of Patti (Pratapgarh), Nand Gopal Gupta Nadi of Allahabad South, and Ramapati Shastri of Mankapur are among the other ministers in the race (Gonda). Raghuraj Pratap Singh, aka Raja Bhaiya, who has served as the MLA for Kunda since 1993, is running for re-election from his Jansatta Dal party, alongside longtime ally Gulshan Yadav running on a Samajwadi Party ticket.

Uttar Pradesh will have voted on 292 of the total 403 seats in the Assembly when election closes on Sunday. On March 3 and 7, the final two phases of the elections will take place. In the Sultanpur , Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Bahraich, Shravasti and Gonda districts, around 2.24 crore people will exercise their right to vote in this phase.

Polling for the fifth phase started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm.
