New Delhi, March 3: Spotify has dissolved its Russian operation and deleted Russian state-sponsored music from its service amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis that started on February 24.
Spotify stated in a statement that the action was in response to a “unprovoked attack against Ukraine,” and that it has taken numerous steps as a result.
“We have closed our office in Russia until further notice,” said the Stockholm-based company, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Furthermore, the streaming giant stated that it had evaluated “thousands of podcast episodes since the start of the war” and that it had hampered consumers’ access to find podcasts owned and run by Russian state-controlled media sites.
Spotify said it has removed all content from Russian state-sponsored news channels RT and Sputnik in the European Union and other markets earlier this week.
It would, however, maintain its service available to Russian users.
“We believe that it is of utmost importance that our service is available in Russia to allow a global flow of information,” Spotify said.
