New Delhi, Mar 5: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday advised the Indian students trapped in Sumy, Ukraine to remain indoors while reassuring them that a safe corridor for them to pass is being discussed with both the Russian and Ukrainian governments.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote on Twitter, “We are deeply concerned about Indian students in Sumy, Ukraine. Have strongly pressed Russian and Ukrainian governments through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire to create a safe corridor for our students.”

In another tweet the MEA said, “Have advised our students to take safety precautions, stay inside shelters and avoid unnecessary risks. Ministry and our Embassies are in regular touch with the students.”

Earlier, Russia had announced a brief ceasefire in portions of Ukraine. “Today, at 10 a.m. Moscow time, the Russian side declares a ceasefire and opens humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,” the Russian defence ministry said, according to Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik.

The development of humanitarian corridors for civilian evacuation was agreed upon during the second round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Belarus.
