New Delhi, March 11: Lasith Malinga, a former Sri Lankan paceman, has been named the new fast bowling coach of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) of the Indian Premier League (IPL), ahead of the league’s 2018 season.

Malinga will join RR’s management team, which includes his former Sri Lanka colleague Kumara Sangakkara, who serves as the franchise’s Director of Cricket. Malinga last played in the IPL in the 2019 season, with the Mumbai Indians, where he won four trophies. Malinga is the most successful wicket-taker in the history of the IPL, with 170 dismissals.

In January 2021, Malinga declared his retirement from all formats of the game. Last season, RR, who won the IPL for the first time in 2008, finished eighth with 10 points from 14 games, failing to qualify for the playoffs.

RR, on the other hand, bolstered their lineup significantly during the IPL mega auction last month.

During the IPL auction, RR landed Shimron Hetmyer, Devdutt Padikkal, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravichandran Ashwin, among others.
