Ranchi, March 31: Expressing their solidarity with Dr Archana Sharma, an alumnus of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) who committed suicide on March 29 at Lalsot in Rajasthan following a protest and FIR against her after the death of a patient admitted for delivery under her care, RIMS Junior Doctors Association (JDA) today took out candlelight march and demanded a thorough probe into the matter.

The march started from the RIMS superintendent’s office and ended near the RIMS emergency gate via medical Chowk.  The Indian Medical Association also supported the march.

Indian Medical Association Women’s Wing President Dr. Bharti Kashyap said that if the Medical Protection Act had been in place in our country, Dr. Archana would have been alive today. She said that there was an FIR against Dr. Archana, due to which she was very scared. She demanded immediate enforcement of the Medical Protection Act in the interest of doctors.

IMA secretary Dr Shambhu said 80 percent of the violence takes place in the health sector, but it is a matter of concern that the Medical Protection Act has not been implemented so far.

“The Supreme Court has directed that Section 302 cannot be imposed on doctors. There is a direction to constitute an inquiry committee even before making an FIR, but this is not happening,” Dr Shambhu said.

President of the Junior Doctors Association Dr Vikas Kumar said that there should be a fair investigation into this entire incident.

“Apart from taking steps to withdraw the FIR against the doctor, the Rajasthan government should give compensation to the dependents of the deceased. The Government should take strict action against the family members of patients who harassed Dr. Archana without having any knowledge of medical complications,” Dr Kumar said.
