Colombo, April 4: The 36-hour curfew that was imposed on Sri Lanka on Saturday evening was lifted at 6 a.m. on Monday morning, but the country remains in a state of emergency.

Following protests outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence on Saturday from 6 p.m., a curfew was imposed in accordance with the powers vested in the President under the provision of the Public Security Ordinance, as the country faces its greatest economic crisis since independence.

Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa the son of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, has resigned from all of his positions.

“I have informed the sec. to the President of my resignation from all portfolios with immediate effect, in hope that it may assist HE & PMs decision to establish stability for the people & the govt of #LKA I remain committed to my voters, my party,” he tweeted.

The Sri Lankan cabinet of 26 members tendered letters of resignation, but not Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, after mounting public outrage over the government’s handling of the country’s economic crisis.

Notably, Sri Lanka is presently facing a foreign exchange shortage which has led to a food, fuel and power shortage.
