Islamabad, April 4: Embattled Former Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed was nominated for the position of caretaker Prime Minister by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday.
According to President Arif Alvi’s announcement, Imran Khan is expected to stay as Prime Minister until a caretaker prime minister is selected.
According to the Dawn newspaper, President Alvi has also written a letter to Prime Minister Khan and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif, requesting names.
According to the letter, the National Assembly (NA) and the federal Cabinet were dissolved on Sunday in accordance with the Constitution.
If they do not agree on the appointment within three days of the NA’s dissolution, Alvi told them to send two nominees each to a committee to be formed by the speaker, consisting of eight members of the outgoing NA, the Senate, or both, with equal representation from the Treasury and the opposition, according to the statement.
The President’s Secretariat said that the Constitution has empowered the president to appoint a caretaker prime minister in consultation with the Prime Minister and the leader of the Opposition in the outgoing NA.
