Ranchi, April 7: Do not insult your urinary bladder which means that do not control the urge for urination which will eventually protect you from urinary incontinence, the involuntary discharge of urine or urge for urination several times in a day, said Kumar Mrigank Singh, the Consultant Urologist at MEDICA.

In an interview with lagatar24.com, Dr Mrigank said, “During old age due to the enlarged prostate, which every male person has, starts getting the problem of frequent urination. With age, the size of prostate glands increases and which restricts the flow of urine and the urge for urination occurs several times. At night a person might get up 3 to 5 times for urination which affects the sleep cycle and several problems tend to arise from that including blood pressure.”

Describing its symptoms he said that a person after attaining the age of 45 to 50 years gets to know that he is getting a frequent urge for urination or has to push hard to pass the urine from the bladder or have to wait to start the urine or is unable to hold the urine until he reaches the bathroom, then he should immediately consult a urologist and get the diagnosis done.

“A simple urine test can tell a lot about the body function. In other words, I can say that urine is a reflection of the function of the body which gives a lot of information about the defects or diseases prevailing inside the body,” he added.

Sharing about the treatment procedure he said that with the advancement in the technology at present microscopic laser surgery can be performed where there will be no blood loss and the patient will be discharged within 3 days.

On the question of what causes this to happen, he said that it is not caused by anything nor happens in every man. It happens due to the enlargement of the prostate gland which can get enlarged both inwards or outwards.

“To prevent this kind of scenario one should not ignore his bladder at his younger age when a person controls his urge for urination. One should clear his bladder as soon as he gets the urge for urination,” he added.

Giving essential tips for prevention he said to not have spicy food which creates problems for the urinary bladder and have green leafy vegetables in the diet. Kegel exercise must be done which helps in giving strength to the bladder.
