Dumka, April 14: Sahibganj district has emerged to be a den of criminal groups who carry out crimes in neighbouring states of Bihar and Bengal while operating from there in the form of different groups of the outlaws.

This is evident from the arrest of three persons belonging to the Radhanagar police station of Sahibganj district by the Bengal police on Wednesday in connection with the robbery of Rs 2 crore in the Axis bank branch in Farakka the same day.

Not only the Bengal police managed to arrest them after an encounter at Ghoraipada along the bordering district of Sahibganj but a portion of the booty was also recovered from their possession along with firearms and ammunition.

The Bengal police said all the three arrested persons were identified as Vishwajit Rai, Arun Sarkar and Prabhakar Sikdar, who belong to Radhanagar police station of Sahibganj district and comprise a group of robbers involved in Wednesday incident of robbery of Rs 2 crore from Farakka-based Axis bank branch.

“The robbers who were eight to nine in number and having arrived on four motorcycles fled in different directions after committing the bank robbery by taking the staff and customers hostage at gun point,” the Bengal police sources said, adding that the rest of the robbers being on the run also hailed from the neighbouring Sahibganj district of Jharkhand who were identified after the interrogation of all the three robbers.

A police team from Sahibganj also rushed to Farakka to identify the robbers.

“Raids are being conducted at the suspected hideouts of the rest of the robbers involved in the Axis bank robbery as three of them were chased and arrested by the Bengal police after an encounter while fleeing towards Barharwa,” said a police official preferring not to be named. SP Anuranjan Kispotta did not respond to repeated attempts for his version.

Recently the sensational blast of explosives which took place in a household at Kajwalichak locality of Bhagalpur on March 4 had also its link to Sahibganj where the explosive materials were allegedly supplied from.

The Sahibganj police, however, remain conspicuous by its silence over the existence of criminal groups operating from the district to carry out crimes in the neighbouring states.
