Islamabad, April 15: Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s new Prime Minister, on Friday accused his predecessor, Imran Khan, of selling Toshakhana gifts for PKR 140 million in Dubai.

“Imran Khan sold these gifts for Rs140 million in Dubai,” PM Shehbaz was reported as telling journalists during an iftar he hosted a day earlier in the federal capital, reported Geo News.

Diamond jewellery sets, bracelets, and wristwatches, he said, were among the pricey gifts. Shehbaz’s statement came in answer to an inquiry on a case filed in the Islamabad High Court demanding details of the Toshakhana, on which then-Prime Minister Imran Khan had stated that the facts could not be given according to the Official Secrets Act of 1923.

Meanwhile, Fawad Chaudhry, a former federal minister and PTI leader, denied PM Shehbaz Sharif’s statement, telling Geo News that the new premier is ‘dumping dirt on Imran Khan.’

When a head of state receives a present from another state or country, he or she is required by law to give it to the Toshakhana. They must pay an amount equal to the gift’s value, which is determined through an auction, if they want to keep it.

These gifts can either be kept in the Toshakhana or auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the national treasury, according to Geo News.
