New Delhi, April 21: The Supreme Court on Thursday kept the status quo in the Jahangirpuri demolition issue and set the next hearing for two weeks from now.
For the time being, the court’s Wednesday injunction to stop the destruction will stand.
In all of the petitions filed in the case, the Supreme Court issued notifications to the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the Delhi Police, the state government, and the Centre. Responses are due from all parties.
The court has also ordered the petitioners to provide documents proving that they were given any prior notice of the destruction.
During a Hanuman Jayanti procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Saturday, a communal altercation erupted between two groups. A total of nine persons were hurt in the incident.
The Delhi Police initiated an investigation and have so far detained 25 adults and two minors in the case.
Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP alleged that individuals guilty in the Jahangirpuri violence were residing in illegal structures that should be dismantled.
On Wednesday, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation began an anti-encroachment campaign to demolish unlawful constructions. Several structures were demolished by nine bulldozers.
The demolition was halted by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, and the status quo was preserved on Thursday.
