New Delhi, May 8: The weather office announced today that Cyclone Asani might produce light to moderate rain with heavy rain in isolated portions of Odisha, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh starting Tuesday.

The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a cyclonic storm travelling northwest at 16 kmph. According to the weather office, the system was centred at 5.30 a.m. over Southeast Bay of Bengal, about 450 kilometres west-northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands), 380 kilometres west of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 970 kilometres southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 1030 kilometres south-southeast of Puri (Odisha).

The system will continue to be a cyclonic storm until Sunday evening, when it will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, which it will be until May 10 night. On May 11 and 12, it will lose steam in the sea and become another cyclonic storm.

Rain will start falling on Tuesday evening, and a yellow rain warning has been issued for three districts in Odisha: Gajpati, Ganjam, and Puri. Heavy rain warnings have been issued for five districts on Wednesday: Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, and Ganjam.

West Bengal is forecast to have heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday this week, according to the weather office, while Andhra Pradesh is scheduled to receive heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cyclone Asani will not make landfall in Odisha or Andhra Pradesh, according to IMD, but will proceed parallel to the coast.
