New Delhi, May 8: The White House announced that G7 leaders, including US President Joe Biden, will hold a virtual meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, the day before Russia celebrates Victory Day.
“On Sunday morning, President Biden will participate in a G7 virtual Leaders meeting chaired by German Chancellor Scholz. The Leaders will be joined by President Zelenskyy of Ukraine,” said a National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson.
The G7 leaders will talk about the latest developments in Russia’s special military mission in Ukraine. The discussions will centre on ways to support Ukraine and show ‘continuing G7 solidarity in our collective response, particularly by imposing significant penalties for Putin’s war.’ The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) are the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, and Italy.
The date of the meeting, according to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, is noteworthy because it will take place the day before Putin participates in Victory Day. On Monday, Russia celebrates the end of World War II with military parades around the country.
“While he expected to be marching through the streets of Kyiv, that certainly is not going to happen,” she said.
According to the White House Press Secretary, the US is considering putting more penalties on Russian billionaires and companies, as well as taking efforts to prevent Russians who have already been sanctioned from avoiding them.
