New Delhi, May 15: Sushil Chandra, India’s 24th chief election commissioner (CEC), handed over the reins to Rajiv Kumar at the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday after completing his term.
Images from the handover ceremony were released on ECI’s Twitter account. According to a government news release, Rajiv Kumar, a 1984 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has worked in various ministries at the federal and state levels in Bihar and Jharkhand.
The 62-year-old official has substantial professional experience throughout the social sector, environment and forests, human resources, finance and banking sectors.
During Kumar’s tenure, he will oversee national elections in 2024 as well as assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana,Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
During his term, he will oversee the implementation of electoral changes such as numerous voter registration dates and the optional linkage of Aadhaar numbers to voter cards.
