New Delhi, May 17: The Enforcement Directorate will question Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee for alleged money laundering, illegal coal mining, and theft in West Bengal, the Supreme Court announced today.

Banerjee, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had requested questioning in his home state rather than in Delhi, where the investigation agency is based.

The Supreme Court today ordered the Bengal government to collaborate with the central investigation agency and provide protection to its staff while in Bengal. If the investigators run across any obstruction linked to the Bengal administration, the Enforcement Directorate has been given permission to proceed to the Supreme Court.

“Will not tolerate any kind of obstruction and interference by the State machinery if ED interrogates Abhishek Banerjee and his wife in Kolkata,” said the court.

The Supreme Court has also suspended a bailable warrant issued by a Delhi court against Banerjee’s wife, Rujira Banerjee, on a complaint by the investigative agency for not answering summons. Rujira Banerjee is one of the people accused of money laundering in the Bengal coal scam.

The apex Court also issued notice to Enforcement Directorate on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s plea against the HC order and seeks response within three weeks and posts the matter for hearing on July 19.
