Varanasi, May 23: District judge Ajay Krishna Vishvesha in Varanasi will hear three petitions on Monday after the Supreme Court handed over the Gyanvapi mosque matter to him on Friday.

The crux of the Gyanvapi dispute is that the Hindu side claims the mosque was built after a 16th-century temple was demolished in its place, while the Muslim side points to the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, which prohibits the conversion of any place of worship’s religious character as it existed on August 15, 1947.

The Hindu side has filed two of the three petitions to be considered on Monday, while the mosque committee has filed one.

Only the lawyers in the case must be present in the courtroom on Monday, according to District Judge Ajay Krishna Vishvesha. Outside the court, security has been increased.
