Dubai: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC), chaired by Mohsin Naqvi, has expressed regret over the Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy, according to NDTV sources. The issue arose when Naqvi, also Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, walked away with the trophy and winners’ medals after India’s victory in the final, leaving the presentation incomplete. While the ACC acknowledged the situation “could have been avoided,” Naqvi has not issued a formal apology.
Trophy Standoff Continues
Sources revealed that the trophy and medals have remained in Naqvi’s Dubai hotel room since Sunday, with no clarity on when they will reach India. Diplomatic back-channel talks are reportedly underway to resolve the standoff. Naqvi is expected to travel to Lahore, further complicating the matter.
BCCI Raises Strong Objection
At an ACC meeting attended virtually by Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar, the BCCI lodged a strong protest. They insisted the trophy belongs to the winning team and not an individual. Initially, Naqvi congratulated Nepal and Mongolia in his opening remarks but ignored India’s unbeaten run. Shelar reportedly forced Naqvi to congratulate the Indian team, which he eventually did.
Next Steps And ICC Involvement
The BCCI has made it clear that the issue could be escalated to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in its November meeting if unresolved. Shukla and Shelar also proposed that the ACC office should hold the trophy until India collects it, calling Naqvi’s handling of the ceremony unacceptable. Sources said Naqvi admitted he felt “like a cartoon” during the presentation confusion.
