New Delhi: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay is scheduled to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday in connection with the ongoing probe into the Karur stampede case, in which 41 people lost their lives during a party campaign event last year.
CBI Summons In Connection With 2025 Stampede
According to information available, Vijay has already departed from Chennai to New Delhi and will reach the national capital shortly, after which he will present himself at the CBI headquarters to cooperate with the investigation. The CBI had earlier issued a notice to Vijay under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), directing him to appear before the agency on January 6. The case pertains to a tragic stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, during a TVK campaign programme in Karur district of Tamil Nadu.
Investigation Ordered By Supreme Court
The Supreme Court had earlier transferred the investigation of the Karur stampede to the CBI. As part of the probe, the agency has already questioned several senior TVK functionaries in New Delhi and examined video footage related to the incident. The CBI has also inspected the campaign vehicle used by Vijay on the day of the event and recorded the statement of its driver. The stampede occurred during a massive political gathering, leaving several others injured besides the fatalities, and triggered widespread public outrage.
State Government, TVK Lock Horns Over CBI Probe
In early December, the Tamil Nadu government filed a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of the CBI probe, arguing that Vijay and his party, being accused in the case, could not choose the investigating agency or seek a monitoring committee. In response, TVK maintained that the state government’s affidavit lacked crucial facts and failed to provide valid grounds to oppose the CBI investigation or the Supreme Court-appointed oversight mechanism, alleging that misleading claims were being made to obstruct the probe.
