Jammu: Veteran politician and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a marriage function in Jammu on Wednesday night. Abdullah later said he was safe and credited divine intervention for his survival.

Gunman Tried To Attack During Public Event

According to reports, the accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, allegedly attempted to target Abdullah while he was leaving a wedding event in the Greater Kailash area on the outskirts of Jammu. The attacker reportedly fired from behind as the National Conference president was moving toward his vehicle.

However, security personnel quickly intervened and overpowered the assailant before he could cause harm.

Security Team Prevented Major Tragedy

Abdullah said the attacker had managed to get very close to him before being stopped by the security team. He stated that members of his close protection squad, including NSG personnel, reacted immediately and pushed him into his car before escorting him safely away from the venue.

The veteran leader later said, “I am fine and God has saved me,” while recalling the tense moment.

Questions Raised Over Security Lapse

The incident has raised serious concerns over security arrangements in the sensitive Union Territory. Abdullah is a Z-category protectee, which normally requires strict access control and prior sanitisation of the event area.

While Farooq Abdullah did not directly comment on the alleged lapse, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concern over the incident and said many questions remained unanswered about how the attacker managed to get so close.

Security Review Ordered After Incident

Following the attempted attack, top officials have begun reviewing the security protocols for central government protectees in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities are also considering strengthening convoy protection systems, including upgrading signal jammers used during movements.
