New Delhi, Sept 15: Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar on Thursday said he had accepted the merger of the state Congress Legislature Party (CLP) into the ruling BJP, a day after 8 out of 11 Congress MLAs in the state joined the BJP.
Speaker made the decision after the Congress MLAs claimed in a letter they had the necessary number of members.
Notably, eight of the eleven Congress legislators in Goa, including former chief minister Digambar Kamat and opposition leader Michael Lobo, joined the governing BJP on Wednesday.
Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira, and Rudolf Fernandes are among the former Congress MLAs who switched to the BJP.
The BJP had 20 legislators and the Congress had 11 in the 40-member Goa Assembly. The BJP currently holds 28 seats in the Assembly.
In a comparable move, 10 Congress MLAs joined the BJP in July 2019.
