Sydney: Following Australia’s defeat in the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal, captain Steve Smith has made a big announcement—his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). However, Smith will continue to play in the Test and T20 formats. Cricket Australia shared the news of his retirement via a post on its official X handle.
Cricket Australia wrote, “The great Steve Smith has bid farewell to his illustrious ODI career. Thank you, Steve! 170 ODIs, 12 centuries, and a two-time ODI World Cup winner.”

Reflecting on his 15-year-long ODI career, Smith called it a “fantastic journey” and expressed gratitude for the memorable moments he cherished.
“I have enjoyed every moment of this journey. Winning two World Cups was a great achievement, and sharing this experience with some fantastic teammates made it even more special,” Smith said.
Perfect Time to Prepare for the 2027 World Cup
The Australian skipper emphasized that now is the right time for Australia to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup, and thus, he felt it was the right moment to step away from ODIs.
“Test cricket remains my top priority, and I am excited for the World Test Championship final, the winter series against West Indies, and the home series against England. I believe I still have a lot to contribute in the Test format,” Smith added.
Smith’s ODI Career: 170 Matches, 5,800 Runs
• Steve Smith made his ODI debut in 2010 and played a total of 170 matches for Australia.
• He scored 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 35 half-centuries and 12 centuries.
• He is Australia’s 16th-most capped ODI player and 12th-highest run-scorer in the format.
Remarkable Record Against India
Smith has been exceptional against India, scoring 1,383 runs in 30 ODIs at an average of 53.19, with 5 centuries and 7 half-centuries.
With Smith stepping away from ODIs, Australia will now look ahead to build a squad for the 2027 World Cup under new leadership.
