New Delhi: As the BJP-led NDA government completed 100 days in its third term, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized the government’s focus on increasing farm productivity while minimizing production costs, ensuring that farmers receive maximum returns. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Chouhan also discussed the government’s efforts to empower women, improve skill development for youth, and address key challenges in the agriculture sector.
Key Achievements in Agriculture
Introduction of New Crop Varieties
The government has introduced 65 new crop varieties that can thrive in higher temperatures and require less water, complementing 109 existing varieties. According to Chouhan, these innovations will enhance productivity, citing the example of pearl millet, which can now be harvested in 70 days instead of the usual 110-120 days.
Reducing Production Costs
Chouhan addressed the rising cost of farming, which often affects profitability. He highlighted measures such as increasing import duty on edible oils and reducing export duty on onions to stabilize markets and ensure fair prices for farmers.
Promoting Diversification and Sustainability
Crop Insurance and Diversification
The Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme continues to provide vital coverage for farmers. The government is also encouraging diversification by promoting the cultivation of flowers, fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. Additionally, new initiatives are being introduced to promote natural farming, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
Natural Farming Initiatives
Chouhan pointed out that farmers are benefiting from ₹2,000 every three months under new schemes. He emphasized the government’s focus on soil health preservation through natural and organic farming, and announced the upcoming launch of a Natural Farming Mission.
Ensuring Fair Compensation and MSP
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, granting states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka permission to procure soybeans at Minimum Support Price (MSP) to guarantee fair compensation.
Women’s Empowerment and Economic Progress
33% Reservation for Women
Under PM Modi’s leadership, a 33% reservation for women in government jobs and legislative bodies has been implemented. The government aims to empower 30 million women through various programs, with 1.1 million already achieving financial independence.
Self-Help Groups and New Roles for Women
Prime Minister Modi has allocated a ₹5,000 crore revolving fund to support Self-Help Groups (SHGs), strengthening women’s economic status. Initiatives such as ‘Drone Didis,’ ‘Bank Sakhi,’ and ‘Pashu Sakhi’ have empowered women to take on new roles, including operating drones for agriculture and managing financial transactions in rural areas.
Skill Development and Employment
Government Jobs and Skill Development
In the first 100 days, the government has announced 15,000 government jobs and launched infrastructure projects worth ₹15 lakh crore, which will create direct and indirect employment. Chouhan also mentioned plans to upgrade Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) to improve the skills of 1 crore youth, enhancing employment opportunities.
India’s Global Contributions
