New Delhi, Nov 11: The Election Commission announced on Friday that “record seizures” of money, alcohol, and gifts had been made ahead of assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
Gujarat will hold elections on December 1 and 5, while Himachal Pradesh will hold elections on Saturday.
According to the electoral board, there have been five times as many seizures in Himachal Pradesh as there were during the 2017 assembly elections.
The Commission said that its thorough pre-election planning, under the direction of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, produced “encouraging” results in terms of seizures.
Gujarat saw seizures totaling 71.88 crore in just a few days after elections were announced, surpassing even the 27.21 crore in seizures made throughout the full period that the Model Code of Conduct was in effect for the 2017 assembly elections.
The seizures in Himachal Pradesh are also significant, totaling 50.28 crore as opposed to 9.03 crore, more than five times the amount, it said.
