New Delhi, Feb 12: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Arshad Madani on Sunday sparked a debate by criticising Mohan Bhagwat, the head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and asserting that ‘Allah’ and ‘Om’ are the same.

“I asked a saint whom did people worship before the existence of Ram and Brahma, to which he responded ‘Om’,” speaking at an event of at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, Madani said.

“Om is something which is referred to as Allah, God and the Lord,” he added.

After the address of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Maulana Syed Arshad Madani, Acharya Lokesh Muni (Jain Muni) present on the stage expressed displeasure over his remarks and left the stage.

Earlier, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Mahmood Madani claimed on Saturday that he is as much a citizen of India as Mohan Bhagwat and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At at the inaugural plenary session of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital, he said, “India is our country. This country belongs to Mahmood Madani as much as it belongs to Narendra Modi and Mohan Bhagwat. Neither Mahmood is an inch ahead of them nor are they one inch ahead of Mahmood.”

The leader of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind stated that his organisation opposes forced religious conversions and added that today, those who willingly change their religion are also imprisoned on spurious charges.

The autonomy of madrassas, religious freedom, Muslim personal law, and the Uniform Civil Code are just a few of the topics that will be covered at the convention, according to Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind. Additionally, it stated that a proposal might be made to offer reserves to Muslims who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
