New Delhi: Yashwant Varma has reportedly submitted his resignation to the President of India amid an ongoing controversy linked to alleged recovery of burnt cash from his residence during his tenure at the Delhi High Court.
Controversy and Transfer Background
The controversy dates back to his tenure at the Delhi High Court, where reports of burnt currency notes being recovered from his residence triggered a major uproar. Following this, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer to the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Varma took oath as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on April 5, 2025, but the matter continued to remain under scrutiny.
Impeachment Proceedings and Probe Underway
Prior to his resignation, discussions were underway regarding possible impeachment proceedings against him. An internal inquiry is currently in progress to examine the allegations.
A committee constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is investigating the matter and is expected to submit its report during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.
The resignation comes amid heightened attention on judicial accountability and institutional integrity.
