New Delhi. July 2: Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of Alt News, is currently facing additional charges from the Delhi Police in connection with an allegedly offensive tweet he sent out in 2018.
The Delhi Police have cited sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and section 35 of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) for allegedly collecting foreign donations.
As part of the investigation, the officials also seized Zubair’s cellphone and found a hard drive.
On June 27, Mohammed Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets and was sent to one-day police custody by the trial court on the same day.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate prolonged his custody for a total of four further days after he was produced following the completion of a one-day in-custody interview.
Earlier, Zubair was charged under IPC sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).
The Delhi Police are also investigating the suspected participation of Twitter identities in the “Twitter storms” that Zubair launched. Although some of these tweets have already been deleted, the police said they are still looking for the trail.
