New Delhi, July 10: Rescue efforts for the 40 people still missing continued over night in Jammu and Kashmir after a cloudburst on Friday caused a flash flood close to the revered cave sanctuary of Amarnath. The cloudburst’s subsequent deluge caused at least 16 fatalities and 105 injuries.
Officials have moved up to 15,000 stranded pilgrims to Panjtarni’s lower base camp ever since the tragedy was initially reported. On Saturday, search efforts continued nonstop due to concerns that more people may still be buried beneath the wreckage.
The Amarnath Yatra would be postponed until the conclusion of rescue efforts, it was determined at a meeting on Saturday with the various authorities participating in the yatra, which was presided over by Jammu and Kashmir’s Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
The Indian Army, the CRPF, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, state disaster response forces, and police all worked together to conduct the rescue operations.
